Driver empties school bus ahead of flames

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A Charlotte, N.C., school bus driver is credited with acting coolly when things got hot on her bus, getting six children off safely before it burst into flames.

Lindora Richardson, 37, said Thursday she smelled something burning and then saw smoke coming from the bus' steering column during her afternoon run the day before, WSOC-TV, Charlotte, reported. She pulled over and led the students from Chantilly Montessori School out the back of the bus, holding their hands and catching them as they jumped to safety.

By the time firefighters arrived, the bus was engulfed in flames.

Richardson said she doesn't see herself as heroic.

"I was just doing my job," she said. "I feel like the kids were heroes. They stayed safe and calm under the whole situation, so I would call them the heroes."

Fire investigators blamed an electrical wiring malfunction for the fire.
